NT Labs GH/KH Hardness Aquarium Test Kit – Essential Water Hardness Monitoring
Accurate Results • Easy Testing • Suitable for All Freshwater Aquariums
Maintaining correct water hardness is vital for the long-term health of your aquarium fish, plants, and biological filter. The NT Labs GH/KH Test Kit provides precise measurements of both carbonate hardness (KH) and general hardness (GH), helping you keep water chemistry stable and stress-free for aquatic life.
What Is KH?
KH—also known as carbonate hardness or total alkalinity—measures your aquarium’s buffering capacity. This indicates how well your water can resist pH changes.
Stable KH levels protect fish from sudden pH swings, which are a common cause of stress, illness, and even mortality.
Ideal KH Levels
-
Minimum safe value: 4 dKH
-
Preferred range: 6–8 dKH
-
Measured in dKH (1 dKH = 17.8 ppm as CaCO₃)
What Is GH?
GH (general hardness) refers to the total dissolved minerals in your water, primarily calcium and magnesium.
Water hardness varies from soft to hard, depending on the mineral content. Higher GH levels also contribute to limescale buildup.
Ideal GH Levels
Different fish species require different hardness:
-
Soft-water species: 3–6 dGH
-
Hard-water species: 10–15 dGH
-
Measured in dGH (1 dGH = 17.8 ppm as CaCO₃)
How to Test KH
-
Ensure the test tube is clean.
-
Fill with 5 ml of aquarium water.
-
Add 1 drop of KH reagent and mix—water turns pale blue.
-
Continue adding drops one at a time, mixing between each, until the colour shifts from blue to yellow.
-
The number of drops used equals your KH value in dKH.
-
If it turns yellow after the first drop, KH is below 1 dKH, which is extremely dangerous.
-
How to Test GH
-
Use a clean test tube and add 5 ml of aquarium water.
-
Add 2 drops of GH Reagent A and mix—water turns dark pink.
-
Add GH Reagent B one drop at a time, mixing between drops.
-
Count drops until the colour changes from pink to blue.
-
The total number of drops equals your GH value in dGH.
-
If it turns blue after one drop, GH is below 1 dGH, indicating very soft water.
